The Kikoy

The kikoy is a traditional woven cotton cloth with deep roots along the East African coast, particularly among the Swahili communities of Kenya and Tanzania. Believed to have originated several centuries ago through trade across the Indian Ocean, the kikoy reflects a blend of African, Arab, Indian, and Persian cultural influences.

Traditionally handwoven from cotton, it is recognised by its vibrant stripes, bold colours, and fringed edges. Originally worn as a practical wrap around the waist by both men and women in the hot coastal climate, the kikoy became an important part of everyday Swahili dress and a symbol of the region’s rich trading heritage.

Today, the kikoy remains one of Kenya’s most iconic fabrics, celebrated for its craftsmanship, comfort, and enduring connection to the country’s coastal culture and artisanal traditions.
